Here is what we will be covering over the next few weeks in each grade:
|
While we talk about the parts of a book and what authors and illustrators do, we will be sharing picture books and completing related activities. First on the agenda is Two Cool Cows by Toby Speed followed by Leo the Lightning Bug by Eric Drachman. Students pick books from a limited selection and take them back to the classroom as they practice carrying books in the hallway and returning library books on time.
We continue to talk about the parts of a book, jobs of authors and illustrators, and story elements using activities and books. Students pick books from a limited selection and take them back to the classroom as they practice carrying books in the hallway and returning library books on time.

Third graders are working on identifying main ideas, reviewing dictionary skills, and identifying and using text features. Students can check out up to 2 books for the week with the focus on caring for our books and returning library books on time.
We are looking at All the Places to Love by Patricia MacLachlan and creating our own campaigns for the places we love. We are also working on learning library-specific vocabulary through activities and presentations and working on identifying main ideas, making inferences, and finding context clues. Fourth graders are able to check out 2 books each week.
Fifth grade students will start a space research project which will involve independent work and group compilations to create projects representing the information they have found. 5th graders choose up to 2 books to check out every other week with the ability to check out books outside of their scheduled library time with permission from their classroom teacher.
We are starting our Newbery unit where students will explore the criteria for awarding a Newbery, examine past winners, explore the world at the time of publication of a Newbery of their choice and research other works and life experiences of that author. By March they will have completed their investigations and created a presentation of their own choice to share that information with others. 6th graders can choose up to 3 books to check out every other week with the ability to check out books outside of their scheduled library time with permission from their classroom teacher.
